print view Getting Out Into the Community
11/17/2009

Author: Lyn  St John

The kids focus this month is about change my world. It can be easy to introduce things to the kids that happen in other countries or even other states. It is very easy to forget about the needs in our own community. With this month's kids focus I challenged them to find ways to change their community.

We have been talking about helping our community at my local church for the last year. Many of the kids have gone with their families to serve food at a local homeless shelter. When the kids go on prayer walks or prayer drives we encourage them to look around and notice if someone's yard looks unkempt or houses for sale. Then we ask them what to pray for. There are some neighborhoods near the church that are a little rough. When asking the kids what to pray about some of the things they said was for families to stay together, pray against drugs and violence. Kids know what to pray for but sometimes in order for the needs to become real they need to get their hands dirty.

In November many areas start having food, toy and clothing drives. Encourage your kids to get involved. Perhaps your group could even organize an event. Look on the internet and in newspaper for opportunities around your area that they kids can be involved in to reach their community. You have been training them how to use God's power to change the world through prayer. Now encourage and train them to be God's hands and feet.
